We go to school alone

The Families

The experience will be considered successful when the families recognize that going to school on their own is possible and acceptable for their children. It is, therefore, necessary to involve the families from the beginning, help them to understand how important it is for their children to recover a bit of their autonomy and for the neighbourhood to recover social solidarity and insure them that the initiative will start when everyone is convinced of the same. The parents who are most in favour of and available towards the initiative can set up a Committee to study the steps to be taken to make the routes safe and to win the resistance of the more reluctant families. The committee will be followed by the "City of Children" Laboratory and by some teachers. One of the mothers, after having promised her 10 year old son that he could go to school on his own, writes: "This novel change has suddenly made him more aware of his own means and responsibilities and I felt that I was important in the life of my son because I was finally able to do something to make him feel self-sufficient, without his mother, without his father."
